I) What is Salvation?

Defined: to be saved; rescue from danger; preserve; keep for future use; prevent waste; avoid fatigue, wear, or damage; to spare; to redeem (Just some of what Christ has done.)



Eph. 2:4-5 (from death to life)
Rom. 5:10 (from enmity to reconciliation)
2 Cor. 5:21(from sin to righteousness)
John 3:18 (from condemnation to pardon)


II) Why do we need salvation? (Why were we called?)

1) In the beginning we didn\'t need salvation - God created man in perfection. Gen. 1:1,31

A) God gave us free will, the ability to choose, love doesn\'t mean anything if it is forced.

B) He loved us and gave us guidelines to help and protect us. (As a loving Father)
a) Gen. 2:17
b) John 3:17
c) 2 Peter 3:9



With free choice comes the responsibility to chose what is right.



2) But we disobeyed - we sinned. Gen. 2:16,17; 3:1-6

A) Our sin causes broken fellowship with God - Isa. 59:2
a) Gen. 3:8
b) Gen. 3:11-13

B) Without God we are empty, hopeless, miserable, and lost:
a) Gen. 3:23

- Children of wrath... disobedience... alienated from God

C) We need our fellowship with God re-established.

b) Lev. 17:11, Heb. 9:22

* Note - Atonement for our sins - atonement (Hebrew word kaphar) literally means - to cover.

Atonement = covering = animal skins = shedding of blood.


III) Who instigates salvation? (Who does the calling?)
Let’s look at God\'s character (Isa. 6:1-7)


A) Our Holy God - Holiness defined as the Moral Excellence of God

c) Isa. 6:5; Ex. 33:18-23
d) Isa. 59:2; Isa. 59:15

B) He’s a Just & Righteous God - God\'s perfect Holiness demands perfect justice.

C) He’s a Merciful & Loving God
a) 2 Pet. 3:9
b) Jer. 31:3
c) Ezek. 36:26-28

IV) How do we come to salvation? (How were we called?) Eph. 2:8-9


1) Sovereignty of God. (What role God plays in our salvation.)
Terms involved:

A) Calling,
B) Election,
C) Predestination,
D) Foreknowledge

A) The term “calling” refers to the inward call by the power of God.
a) 1 Tim. 2:4
b) John 5:40
c) 1 Cor. 1:9
d) 2 Thess. 2:14

B) The term election denotes that we are \"picked\" or \"chosen\" by God.
a) John 15:16
b) Eph. 1:4-6

C) Predestination denotes that from all eternity God has sovereignly determined that his elect would be conformed to and reconciled through His Son. Rom. 8:29

D) Foreknowledge refers to God\'s \"omniscience\" or \"knowing all things ahead of time\" because He is beyond time itself. 1 Pet. 1:2



2) Free will of man. What part we play in salvation. Rom 3:10
a) John 3:19 (Tired of the darkness) need a change of behavior.
b) John 5:44 (Stop patting yourself on the back) need a change of actions.
c) John 7:17 (Do you desire to know God) need a change of desires.
d) Luke 18:22 (What’s the # 1 priority in your life?) need a change of priorities.

Matt. 28:18-20 - “ Don’t strive, just do”

John 15:13 No greater love has anyone than this .....


May we never forget the great cost of our salvation.
May it always be the motivation for what we do.
